What is the Yoto Mini Smart Cable?

The Yoto Mini Smart Cable works like a regular USB-C cable, with additional ‘smart’ functionality to regulate the power delivered to your Yoto Mini and help ensure safe charging at all times.

How does the Yoto Mini Smart Cable work?

The Yoto Mini Smart Cable has been developed by Yoto working with independent battery and product safety experts. The smart cable contains a microprocessor chip that is able to communicate with the Yoto Mini to keep the battery charge within safe limits – and minimize the risk of overheating.

Additionally, the Yoto Mini Smart Cable uses a faster charging protocol, which means your Yoto Mini will be charged at 2x the normal charging speed when used with any power adapter rated 5W or higher.

When connected to a Yoto Mini and charging as normal, the Yoto Mini Smart Cable LED will be lit up in full. A short press of the Yoto Mini power button will show the blue charging icon with an approximate battery level. The smart cable LED light will continuously blink and charging will stop if a fault has been detected.

Can I continue to use my Yoto Mini while I wait for my Yoto Mini Smart Cable to arrive?

No. You should stop using your Yoto Mini manufactured between 2021 and 2023 immediately until you have received your Yoto Mini Smart Cable. Yoto Mini (2024) edition is unaffected and doesn’t need the Yoto Mini Smart Cable to charge. It is, however, compatible with the Yoto Mini Smart Cable.

Can I use other USB-C charging cable, alongside the new Yoto Mini Smart Cable, to charge my Yoto Mini?

Once you have received your Yoto Mini Smart Cable, you should only use this cable to charge your Yoto Mini if it was manufactured between 2021-2023.

Is it safe for my child to use the Yoto Mini Smart Cable to charge their Yoto Mini?

No, as with any electronic device, chargers should only be handled by an adult and your Yoto Mini should be charged out of reach of children.

Can I resell or gift my affected Yoto Mini?

All Yoto Minis manufactured between 2021 and 2023 must be sold or gifted with a Yoto Mini Smart Cable. 

I’ve read that Yoto is also issuing a software update for the Yoto Mini. Do I need to do anything?

You don’t need to do anything. The software update will be automatically carried out on any Yoto Mini connected to Wi-Fi and not being used.

I’ve read that Yoto is also issuing a software update for the Yoto Mini. How will I know if this has taken place?

To check if the update has taken place, open the Yoto App, go to Players and open the Settings menu of your Yoto Mini. Scroll to the bottom of the Settings to check the Yoto OS version is v2.17.5 or higher. 

Will using the Yoto Mini Smart Cable mean the battery charge won’t last as long?

Both the Yoto Mini Smart Cable and the software update will restrict the maximum charge level to protect the battery. We have already been able to introduce optimizations to the Yoto Mini software to reduce the impact on battery life. Further optimizations will be released following shipping of the Yoto Mini Smart Cable. Any impact on run time and user experience should be minimal.    

Will the Yoto Mini Smart Cable work with any USB-A power adapter?

Yes, the smart charging cable will work with any USB-A power adapter with an output power rating of 5V/1A (5W) or greater. If you find that your Smart Cable is on, with the solid LED light showing, but your device is not charging, we recommend you try an alternative power brick. Can I use a normal USB-A power bank with the Yoto Mini Smart Cable?

Yes, the smart charging cable should work with any standard USB-A power bank with an output power rating of 5V/1A (5W) or greater. If, for any reason, your cable isn't working as expected, please contact us for further support. 

Can I use the Yoto Mini Smart Cable with other devices in my home?

We recommend that the Yoto Mini Smart Cable is used only with Yoto Minis sold between 2021-2023 to provide the best level of charge. If used with another device, it will not damage that device, but it may not charge it. 

Does this issue affect my Yoto Mini guarantee?
